5:00 Five Minute Movements

5-Minute Ab Workout

Time
5:00
Level
Beginner to intermediate
Equipment
None. A mat or rug helps.

Eight exercises, 30 seconds each, with two short rests. That is the whole workout. It hits the front of your trunk, the sides, and the deep muscles that hold your spine still.

Five minutes will not give you a six-pack — that mostly comes down to body fat. What it will do is make your core stronger and more aware, and it is short enough that you can actually do it most days.

The routine

  1. 30s

    Dead bug

Low back pressed into the floor. Reach opposite arm and leg away slowly.

    Easier: Move only the legs.

  2. 30s

    Crunch

Curl your ribs toward your hips. Hands lightly behind the head, never pulling.

Easier: Smaller range; hands on thighs.

  3. 30s

    Reverse crunch

Knees bent, roll your hips off the floor toward your chest. Lower with control.

Easier: Tap feet down between reps.

  4. 15s

    Rest

Breathe. Shake out whatever just worked.

  5. 30s

    Bicycle crunch

Slow it down. Rotate the shoulder toward the opposite knee.

Easier: Keep the straight leg higher off the floor.

  6. 30s

    Forearm plank

Squeeze glutes, pull elbows toward toes. Straight line from head to heels.

    Easier: Knees down.

    Hips high. Elbow under shoulder.

    Easier: Bottom knee down.

    Easier: Bottom knee down.

  9. 15s

    Rest

Breathe. Shake out whatever just worked.

  10. 30s

    Hollow hold

Low back down, arms and legs reaching long. Hold the shape.

Easier: Bend the knees and keep arms by your sides.

  11. 30s

    Mountain climbers

From a high plank, drive knees toward chest at a steady pace.

    Easier: Step instead of run.

Tips

  • If your low back arches off the floor, make the move easier. The point is the trunk working, not the back.
  • Breathe out as you curl or brace. Holding your breath makes everything harder than it needs to be.
  • Twice through on days you have ten minutes.

Questions

Is a 5-minute ab workout enough?

For getting stronger, yes — done most days, five focused minutes adds up to more core work than most people do in a week. For visible abs, the workout matters less than overall body fat.

Can I do this every day?

Yes. The load is light. If anything is sore from the last session, swap in the easier versions.

Does it work without equipment?

Yes. Every move uses only body weight. A mat makes the floor kinder.

Got another five minutes?

Why five minutes at a time works: movement snacks.
